At the world's most important industrial trade fair, companies from the mechanical engineering, electrical and digital industries as well as the energy sector will jointly present solutions for an efficient and sustainable industry. Over 4,000 companies will present themselves as a networked industrial ecosystem and demonstrate how electrification, digitalization and automation can contribute to achieving climate neutrality.

At the joint booth “Forschung für die Zukunft” (C24) in Hall 2, Fraunhofer IKTS is presenting developments for hydrogen and membrane technologies as well as a novel sensor node for the condition monitoring of standing trees. In addition, the innovation cluster abonocare^® is showing solutions for the recycling of organic residues.

Hydrogen technologies

Fraunhofer IKTS has decades of experience in the development and construction of electrochemical reactors for the production and use of hydrogen. Industrial electrolysis is therefore one of the most important fields of activity.

Since hydrogen is easy to store and transport in pipelines, it is an attractive option for the transportation of goods and in other mobility sectors, as well as for industrial applications. Fraunhofer IKTS supports these efforts with solid materials science expertise and measurement and testing technology for monitoring tanks and pipelines.

Fraunhofer IKTS contributes extensively to the use of hydrogen, including the conversion of hydrogen into chemical energy carriers or basic chemicals, reconversion in fuel cells, and direct use in thermal processes or the steel industry. Fraunhofer IKTS develops and demonstrates these technologies with extensive system expertise and prototype and testing capacities.

Neo-PEC: innovative hydrogen technology

Hydrogen plays a key role in the search for future energy sources which reduce CO₂ emissions and provide a stable energy supply. Accordingly, the joint project “Neo-PEC” aims to develop a tandem module that will in future produce green hydrogen in a clean and cost-effective manner, thus enabling a decentralized hydrogen supply using an energy carrier which is transportable according to demand. With the help of the module, water is directly split into hydrogen and oxygen by photo-catalytic means (Photo Electro-Catalytic (PEC) Water Splitting). This novel technology does not require expensive electrolyzers and is scalable as required. The so-called Neo-PEC tandem can be integrated into scalable modules and is thus attractive for the large-scale industrial production of green hydrogen.

Membrane technologies

Fraunhofer IKTS actively contributes its expertise in membrane technology, for example in the areas of CO₂ separation, water treatment, decentralized oxygen production, and hydrogen production and use. Key application areas include liquid filtration, membrane contactors, pervaporation and vapor permeation, gas separation and membrane reactors.

To this end, Fraunhofer IKTS develops a wide range of membrane materials and catalysts, for example for energy-saving high-temperature gas separation processes. The ceramic, metallic and composite components (cermets) developed at IKTS are suitable for easy integration into pilot plants and are optimized for high packing densities and gas throughputs.

Nanoporous membranes are another topic of research. These are filters with pores in the nanometer and subnanometer range. Through targeted adjustment of pore size, polarity and surface properties, nanoporous membranes can be used for separation at the molecular level in liquids, gases and vapors. Membrane elements include flat, tubular (single and multi-channel pipes), capillary and honeycomb geometries. Continuous processing, low energy consumption, modular design, short start-up times and no chemical additives are the hallmarks of nanoporous membrane technology.

TREEMON: Condition monitoring of trees

Assessing the vitality of standing trees is of great interest for environmental protection, tree care, fruit cultivation and forestry. The TreeMon project therefore aims to develop an autonomous sensor node for micro-acoustic sound emissions and put it into practice.

To this end, a demonstrator of a wireless sensor node is to be developed, which is attached to the trunk of the tree. It records micro-acoustic sound emissions over a longer period of time and evaluates them independently or with the help of a central computer on the basis of machine learning. In addition to temperature, humidity and wind data, dendrological and digital optical parameters of the tree will also be recorded. The digital measurement system is intended to detect and classify significant damage and diseases at an early stage, suggest timely measures, and allow more stable and better yields in fruit growing. Furthermore, it is intended to evaluate the effectiveness of long-term measures in forestry and, if necessary, serve as a basis for their adaptation and modification.

abonocare® – From waste to recyclable material: so that the most valuable things don't end up in the trash

The industrial bioeconomy aims to replace fossil raw materials with renewable, bio-based alternatives and thus reduce CO₂ emissions and environmental pollution. A key aspect of the bioeconomy is the circular economy, in which residual materials are viewed as valuable resources and recycled. This offers immense opportunities for environmental protection, economic development and the promotion of a sustainable society.

The abonocare® innovation cluster provides economically viable value chains for this – for example in the area of nutrient recycling from sewage sludge, fermentation products or process and waste water from food processing. The focus here is on the utilization of previously lost nutrients for efficient agricultural production while at the same time protecting the environment. In future, complex recycling plants are to be built close to the place of origin, e.g. in regions with a high livestock population or at industrial sites, in order to refine their residues into fertilizer on site. abonocare^® has the necessary interlinked technology chains for conditioning, conversion, fractionation and packaging as well as extensive analytical capacities and test facilities for product and process development.

abonocare^®sees itself as a platform for sharing knowledge and developing new customer-oriented solutions for the recycling and energy recovery of organic waste. At the Hannover Messe, the cluster is therefore hosting a forum with keynote speakers, best practice examples and roundtable discussions that impressively illustrate the potential and the corresponding technological processes for the utilization of organic residues.
