Open Day at Fraunhofer IKTS in Hermsdorf
The Open Day offers all those interested exclusive insights into the laboratories and technical facilities of Fraunhofer IKTS at the Thuringian site in Hermsdorf. Experience research on high-performance ceramics up close!
During guided tours of the institute, our researchers will provide insights into current projects involving eco-friendly stationary energy storage and the promising energy carrier hydrogen. In our Water Application Center, you can also find out more about the so-called 4th purification stage – Fraunhofer technologies ensure that, for example, drug residues can be removed from our drinking water. Ceramic membranes, which perform complex separation tasks, are a key topic at the institute – our scientists will explain the pilot plants and systems to you. Ceramics as thin as foils? Ceramic tapes are cast live in our tape casting center. Find out how these components are used in batteries and microsystems.
A special highlight will be presented to the public for the first time at the Open Day: the recently completed research and development center for transparent ceramics. An outstanding technical infrastructure consisting of various systems for powder preparation, shaping and processing enable the testing of a wide range of possible applications for transparent ceramics.
Anyone who researches materials must also analyze them. You are invited to become active yourself during the open day. You can find out more about viscosity, sedimentation and non-Newtonian fluids in everyday experiments for young and old. Our analytics experts will also show you how ceramic components are measured, for example in a scanning electron microscope.
The Sensor Space, a maker space for sensor technology and technical ceramics in Eastern Thuringia, will also be on site and invites younger visitors to get hands-on. We will also be providing information about apprenticeships and current job vacancies.
If you have any questions, the boss will be happy to answer them personally! Prof. Ingolf Voigt, site manager Hermsdorf and Deputy Institute Director of Fraunhofer IKTS, will give a short presentation entitled
“Into the future with ceramics – how a material is changing our world”
(held in German, every hour from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) on the development of the institute and current research results and will be available to answer any questions.
We look forward to showing you the world of high-performance ceramics!
