Cu-Si3N4 circuit boards for power electronics

High strength is required to withstand demanding thermal cycles in power electronics. Silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) is the most suitable material for this. Fraunhofer IKTS is therefore working with European partners to evaluate all stages of the value chain from the powder to the finished AMB (Active Metal Bonding) substrate.

Ceramic temperature sensors

Ceramic semiconductors can realize electrically reliable and stable functions up to very high temperatures. Doped materials based on boron carbide or silicon carbide composites have a significantly higher thermal power than metallic materials and can therefore provide stronger and more accurate thermoelectric effects for the detection of temperatures up to > 2400 °C. Therefore, Fraunhofer IKTS develops, characterizes and manufactures thermoelectric ceramic temperature sensors.

Solid electrolyte substrates for sodium batteries

As a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to lithium batteries, solid-state sodium batteries contain significantly fewer critical elements in both the electrolyte and the material. In order to ensure an efficient material combination of metallic anode, cathode and solid electrolyte for applications at room temperature, Fraunhofer IKTS is developing glass-ceramic solid electrolytes. In addition to high ionic conductivity, these offer good corrosion resistance to ambient humidity and CO₂ as well as stability against metallic sodium.
