Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTSBMBF competence cluster greenBatt officially launched
The greenBatt cluster, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, launched on March 3, 2021 with a digital kickoff. Closing raw material cycles within the battery life cycle and thus creating the foundation for sustainable electromobility is the mission of the cluster.
In collaboration with the industry, researchers of altogether 34 university and research institutes work together in greenBatt on the development, design and application of innovative technologies, methods, and tools for an energy- and material-efficient battery life cycle and closed material cycles. The research encompasses both battery recycling and resynthesis processes in order to enable the use of recovered materials in the production. In addition, the availability and quality of data for the development of multidisciplinary life cycle models and tools shall be increased and recommendations for action are to be made.
Together with the competence cluster BattNutzung, greenBatt constitutes the cross-sectional initiative Batterielebenszyklus within the framework of the Forschungsfabrik Batterie of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
The BMBF funds greenBatt with around 30 million euro. The competence cluster is coordinated by Professor Christoph Herrmann (TU Braunschweig, Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST), Professor Alexander Michaelis (Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS) and Professor Bernd Friedrich (RWTH Aachen University, Institute IME Process Metallurgically and Metal Recycling).
