Sulphuric acid, sulphate-rich mining waters and mining waters containing heavy metals are responsible for serious damage to water systems worldwide. For their treatment, especially for the separation of sulfate (sulfuric acid), there are hardly any alternatives to the RODOSAN® process. This is a membrane electrolysis process with which a largely selective separation of sulfate can be achieved. At the same time, heavy metals (Fe, Mn) and aluminum are quantitatively eliminated and buffer capacity is generated in-situ electrochemically. The separated sulfate can be converted into valuable materials such as fertilizers.

The process has been tested for various applications on a pilot scale on the basis of industrial electrolysis cells and is modularly configured so that both small and very large quantities of water can be treated. A pilot plant with a capacity of 6 m3/h is available for technical investigations and process optimization.
