Corrosion monitoring of storage tanks

With CoMoDetect^®, the Fraunhofer IKTS offers a system solution for monitoring the condition of tank installations in safety-relevant industrial sectors that determines structural integrity by evaluating special ultrasonic waves. Both active signature analysis and passive acoustic emission analysis are used. The system consists of a network of sensors (CoMoSens^® Ex) and an electronic data acquisition device (CoMoBase^® Ex). The distance between the sensors defines the area to be monitored. For good defect detection of crack depths, the spatial resolution is about a quarter of the wall thickness of the container. In order to increase the spatial resolution of critical areas, several sensors can be interconnected to form clusters.

The installation of the sensors can be carried out in a short period of time, as they are fixed to the vessel by established welding processes. Thus, the sensors, which are certified for different temperature ranges, are permanently connected to the container. This enables permanent measurements. The monitoring system can also be extended at any time.
