Glass solders and Active filler brazes joining of SiC

Depending on the application of SiC-ceramics electrical conducting or insulating joints are required. According to this active brazing filler metals and brazing filler metals in combination with metallization layers as well as amorphous and crystallizing glass solders can be employed. Special interest has to be paid to the reactivity of carbide based ceramics in contact glasses (formation of pores) and metallic brazes (redox reactions and formation of silicon and silicides). Thus brazes and solders have to be adapted for the different applications regarding mechanical, thermal and electrical requirements and also with respect to possible disadvantageous reactions.
